The chicken fajita at Beaverton Tavern was crisp and moderately spicy, a good fit for anyone wanting Mexican food but with less of a kick.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: Beaverton is my favorite town in Michigan.
I visited Beaverton for the first time last year and I will always jump at the opportunity to try something new there.
On my most recent trip to the town I got to visit the Beaverton Tavern.
The restaurant reopened in June 2022 after being purchased and renovated by Dennis Martin, Robin Smith-Martin and three of their four children. The first thing I noticed upon entering was sound of laughter. On one side of the restaurant people were drinking and dancing to music under the colorful lights. In the back of the restaurant at the bar a group of people were chatting and laughing.
The atmosphere was immediately welcoming. I could tell everyone was having a great time.
Dining Out With The Daily News
When I saw how packed the place was and the “Please wait to be seated” sign, I started to worry that we were going to be waiting for a while.
Beaverton Tavern offers complimentary chips and salsa for diners to snack on while they peruse the menu.
I was pleasantly surprised when a hostess came up almost immediately and found us a table.
I had barely sat down before our waitress arrived with a bowl of tortilla chips and salsa. Usually salsa at Mexican restaurants can be a little too spicy for me - but not this time. I was very happy with the spice level and appreciate that anyone can enjoy this complimentary appetizer without worrying about the spiciness.
As it is a tavern, I ordered a Malibu Lemonade (literally lemonade with a respectable amount of coconut-flavored rum). The presentation of drinks here is wonderful as they come in small Mason jars with embellishments such as lime slices on the rim. I’m a sucker for a good use of Mason jars. I appreciate that in a busy tavern the bartenders still take the time to make the drinks look fun and as delicious as they taste.

For only $3.75 I think this drink was the perfect size and a great blend of flavors.

For an entree I ordered the chicken quesadilla, which served not only as my dinner for the night, but also for lunch the next day. For $11.99 I got a large meal with a quesadilla taking up more than half of the plate and even hanging off the edge a little.
I don’t often order quesadillas. I prefer the crunchiness of a hardshell taco, but here the flour tortillas are cooked to give a nice amount of crunch. Once again, I was worried the fajita chicken would be too spicy for me, but I was able to eat half the meal without my mouth catching on fire - that is to say, the spice level was just right for someone like me.
Now, it would be impossible to talk about the BT without mentioning its famous wet burrito.
Many were concerned with the new ownership that this particular item wouldn’t live up to the original. My boyfriend was able to give insight as someone who has enjoyed BT’s wet burrito for years, both before and after the change in ownership.
He didn’t notice much of a change. He enjoyed the ring of tortilla chips that surrounded the burrito on its plate. While he thought it could use more refried beans - as he didn’t notice in the first few bites that it had any - he did enjoy the ground beef inside and the sauce poured on top. From trying a bite of the dish, I agree that a taste of the refried beans was hard to find, but the ground beef was seasoned well and added great flavor in combination with the sauce on top.
While $17.99 seemed like a steep price at first, I realized it was appropriate for the amount of food served as my boyfriend made it through about half before packing it up for lunch the next day.
For $17.99, Beaverton Tavern's infamous wet burrito can serve as dinner and lunch the next day.
We ended the night with a brownie sundae, which my sweet tooth and I thought was the best part of the meal. Despite feeling too full to take another bite, my boyfriend and I ate the entire sundae, right down to the last drop of chocolate syrup. The warm brownie was hidden under the immense scoop of vanilla ice cream, which was topped with my favorite: a good dollop of whipped cream. With desserts for only $5.99, it's hard to pass up this sweet treat to end the meal on a wonderful note.
For those who don’t often stop in Beaverton, the BT is a great place for lunch, dinner or even just a drink with friends.
While I was there I saw family and friends celebrating a 30th birthday, a group of men drinking beer and laughing with the bartenders, a double date with Valentine’s Day decorations across the table and an older couple enjoying a pizza dinner.
My favorite thing about Beaverton is that there’s something for anyone to enjoy, and that stands true within this restaurant.
Whether you’re looking for Mexican food with a low spice level or just a good drink, the Beaverton Tavern has it all.
